My wardrobe looks like a circus exploded in it. I am subjected to wearing suits and formal work clothes Monday to Friday, so in my own time my maxim is the brighter the better. My staples are coloured dresses, sequins and anything else shiny. However, this winter, as I wander the High Street (which is disappointing to say the least) I am finding myself drawn back to black (used to wear a lot as an angsty, weight-conscious teenager).

I don’t know if this is age creeping up on me or a reaction to a pretty big fail by most of the high street stores for A/W 2010, but I seem to be going black and minimal in my fashion choices.  It may also be after reading the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy on holidays – perhaps I am channelling my inner Lisbeth Salender?  Whatever, I am feeling the grunge look. The refined grunge look I might add – I am not a fan of ripped tights or Taylor Momsen’s racoon eyes.

So I think the focus of my Back to Black Attack is this black leather skirt from Pepe – spied it in BT2 and it screams sophistication rather than try-hard. It’s also available on ASOS – I loves it…I just need to work up the courage to wears it.

I think this dress from Manoush is FABULOUS and could see myself and this dress propping up a bar with a killer pair of stilettos . I love the way the focus is on the bum and not on the cleavage. I am also loving Marks & Spencers tights at the moment and think a pair of the dramatic lace ones could work very well with this outfit. They have some plum/purple ones that could alternatively add a nice contrast.

It is pricey. But,  I did say this winter I am going to try and put together one of those ‘capsule wardrobes’ (such the fash-pack buzz word) and a black dress is a staple right?

These boots from ALDO are bitchin’. They have just the right touch of Victoriana/Gothic going on to fit in with my current clothing mood. I also love boots with lace -ups as they are easier to fit on over leggings/treggings/jeggings (when did we stop wearing trousers?).

I am in love with these embellished black leggings from River Island and think they would look fantastic with one of the many leopard print tops on the High Street. And big hair. These leggings scream big hair

I will be teaming all of the above with my trusty black eye-liner from MAC and hoping to pull off a return to black.  It’s not as simple as piling on a load of black – it may be slimming, but too much and you start getting handed the number for the Samaritans. A lot of black with a lick of class – that’s what I’m after

Stop the press peeps…It has just been announced that the stunning French design house Lanvin is teaming up with highstreet giant H&M!!! And to say I’m excited would be a MASSIVE understatement.  This is huge news people… Lanvin is one of my all time fave designers, oozing ridiculously unattainable glamour, luxury and sophistication…

I hate to admit it, and if I’m honest I am still in semi denial about the fact that summer is coming to an end but on the upside the dreaded sales are coming to an end (whoop) and Autumn Winter trends are taking over, with lots of new yummy trends to get my teeth into (extended whooooop) Every cloud has a silver lining eh!!! Working in a boutique, I’m like a kid in a candy store with new stock arriving every day!

Over the coming weeks I plan to do a focus on different key trends and micro trends that take my fancy, but after trawling through Harpers Bazzar, Vogue, Instyle, style.com, Image and our very own Stellar I thought I’d give you ‘What Will I Wear Today?’ readers a quick rundown of what we’ll be wearing over the coming months…. Sure, we’ve got to deal with long dark evenings, what seem like even darker mornings, cold and yucky rain and the dreaded umbrellas blowing inside out dilemma… but hey nothing a new a delicious new pair of booties won’t help us overcome…. ahhhh yes shoes the answer to all my woes..

Anywho folks here’s a quick trend overview. I’ve picked my favourite ten…

Delicate lace, sheer chiffon, uber feminine satin, frills, bows, floaty, billowing fabrics, baby pinks, pretty pastels, natural nudes…. all that’s missing is hundreds of daisies and big open meadows and we’ve got the intro to The Sound of Music or an ad for washing detergent….but no, what I am trying to create in your minds is the image of the ultra feminine romantic trend taking highstreet by storm. Yep the romantic trend is big news and girly, soft and oh so pretty is the order of the day. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been sitting here trying to decipher what my thoughts are on animal print, more specifically leopard print, and how to wear it and more importantly… rock it ! But I gotta admit it’s a tricky one. Leopard print is BIG news (again!!) for Autumn Winter 2010, and wandering around Grafton street today, its pretty much everywhere already– Zara, River Island, Topshop, H&M and BT2. Cheryl Tweedy was even papped in an uber cute babydoll leopard dress recently, there’s the nod folks – its so in right now!!!! The thing with leopard print is that its omni present across almost every season, never really going out of fashion as such and having a ‘come back’ almost every other year… I picked up a pair of leopard print Steve Madden mega high heels a few seasons ago, and my love for them never falters… Read the rest of this entry »

You’ll probably have noticed through my recent blogs, there is more than just the one reference to Jasmine Di Milo. Di Milo is by and large one of my fav designers at the mo… mind you, I tend to be quite fickle and this can change…. but for right now, you could say I am just a tiny bit obsessed with her work – I am loving her Spring Summer 2010 collection.  So you can imagine my incredible disappointment at the recent announcement that Jasmine’s Autumn Winter 2010 collection, oddly entitled ‘The Puzzle Factory’, will be her last… The official statement was that Jasmine has decided, after only ten years of designing, to now focus on her other interests!! Booo to that! So I thought it was only right to pay homage to her… after all from now on her pieces will be collector items… so get buying I say!!!

The other night I had a dream. I was a teacher, Dylan Moran was my boyfriend and my parents were a travelling folk music duo. Somehow from this madness an epiphany emerged. I began to examine my fashion personality.

So its safe to say I have never been an A-wear fan. I always thought it was the Fair City of fashion i.e. a poor Irish substitute of our neighbours across the water. The clothes were never as on trend and the material always poor quality. A-wear was similar to Pennys but double the price and lacking the ability to adapt High Fashion to High Street. I’ve a tendency to waffle a bit when I’m writing so I’ll get straight to the point.
I want a suit. But not any old suit. A good suit. A sexy suit. A suit that makes me look competent, sharp and professional.
I bought a suit once. From Dunnes. It was black with blue pinstripe. I thought it was the shiz at the time. But changing from a job where I was standing and walking all day to one that required me to wear a suit meant I soon chubbied up and grew out of said suit. I haven’t had one since. Let me get one thing straight before I start my little rant on maxi dresses – I am average ish height, about 5’8 or so – by no means a giant, but going by the length of maxi dresses on the high street I am!! The single most difficult thing to find (for me) was a floor sweeping maxi dress, what is particularly frustrating about this is, that in my mind, no maxi dress looks right if it’s any shorter than floor length, it should skim the ground, the shoes (wedges, gladiators, flip flops, cons whatever tickles your fancy) should not be visible or at the most a flash of an embellished sandal is acceptable! Just a word of warning for all you who may be planning on purchasing! Read the rest of this entry »
