Oooooooooh, Current Affairs meets Fashion – Fantastic…

So, I have a job that requires me to read the less fun papers – (Irish Times, Irish Independent, Financial Times, Sunday Business Post etc). Craic central. However, I often enjoy some of the lifestyle articles and general debate that these papers contain. While as much as I adore Grazia, it doesn’t quite pack the same punch intellectually as the Irish Times opinion section. So for the last few years there has been rumblings in the jungle that Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith (not a name for the back of a postcard) might be popping by Áras an Uachtaráin for a wee spot of tea with lovely, lovely Mary McAleese.

‘So what?’ I hear you say. As did I. However, it has been a HOTBED of debate and political wrangling in the papers. Me personally I have no problem with a small 84 year old lady swinging by to take in the sights accompanied by her 89 year old, politically incorrect but always hilarious husband Prince Philip. But according to some folk, it is a slap in the face after our year of struggle from her oppression (she was born 11 years after the Easter Rising and 5 years after the creation of the Free State). Also she is apparently guilty of war crimes due to being the head of the British Army. I find this funny since Ireland cheerfully welcomed the Iranian Foreign Minister to visit a few weeks ago and there are some serious questions to be answered about Iran’s commitment to preserving Human Rights (as demonstrated by his bodyguards unlawful and overly forceful removal of protesters)

Now at this stage, I can hear you all screaming (in your heads of course for you are mainly at your desks in work) where is the FASHION??
So I will get to the point. I think the Queen is the most fantastic style icon. She never steps out without her shoes being shined, her hair being blow dried and her broaches being polished. Her hat and handbags always match and she manages to wear gloves in all seasons. I find it inspiring that she manages to present such a coordinated figure considering her children, children-in-law and grandchildren attempt and succeed in embarrassing her at every turn (I think we all need a minute to think about and shudder over Beatrice, Eugenie and Zara’s many frequent fashion faux paus) – with their numerous divorces, falling out of nightclubs, vulgar spending and general idiocy.

Looking lovely and summery in blue - Hat matches coat - Check. Shoes match handbag - Check.

Looking stylish in deep blue with her fantastic accessory of three beefeaters!

Rocking an all white ensemble - no easy feat.

And staying poised when some clumsy oaf spills there dinner on you - in fairness we have all been there.

Love her or loathe her you have got to admire her style.

P.S. she does recycle a lot of her clothes and I have seen her in the same outfit or hat more than once.
