as i sit here at my desk, i look at my blackened fingers and feel enraged. my highly anticipated knuckle duster from galibardy leaves a dickensian coal smear across my fingers when i take it off. this then reminds me of the topshop collection of ‘diamond’ rings that after two wears, resembled the plastic tat you get from a halloween brack. next i think of the many broaches sitting at home forlornly, missing pins and clasps. or the broken belt buckle from my peter o’brien coat, rendering the key piece – the belt – unusable, and the remaining piece – the coat – dull. and the magnificent, porn star aviator sunglasses from brick lane; screws loose after a month. why, oh why must accessories die? or perhaps it is the lure of the easily accessible highstreet. catwalk replicas at a fraction of the price…and to their detriment, a fraction of the quality. the emperors new clothes indeed.
well i think i have found the middle ground. i discovered an amazing spanish label called bimba and lola on holiday one year. the clothing line is nice – streamlined, pared back workwear and neutral interpretations of trends – but it is the accessories that really elevate the label. a veritable wonderland of restrained quirkiness and whimsy…neck-collars to lift a t-shirt or a dress, opulent rings, imaginative cuffs…just unusual, affordable, quality accessories.
