Pigeon and Plum`s Vaudeville Circus took over Ulster Hall on Sunday 22nd of March and transformed it into a Victorian music hall. Myself and a few friends headed to Belfast to check out the show. Amidst the grand balconies and sweeping arches, old-time performers got up to mime, juggle and balance chairs. Acts included ‘The Worlds Strongest Man’, two child-like female acrobats and contortionists and the Tiger Lillies – a musical mash of gypsy-punk, twisted opera and pre-war cabaret. The theme of the night was gothic Victoriana and amazingly, people dressed for the occasion. There were waistcoats and cravats, braces and feathered hats. There were suspenders and basques, elbow length gloves and cigarette holders. My coterie adhered to the dress code, wearing feather boas, fascinators and lace. I myself left it too late and resorted to a short grey wool American Retro dress with capped sleeves and nipped-in waist. My only nod to the night were little black ankle booties. A splendid evening it was and it definitely whetted the appetite for more themed dressing.
